Tucked into a quiet pocket of Allenspark, far from the noise and pace of the Front Range, the Ski Road Cabin was designed as a place to slow down. For now, it serves as a weekend retreat. Over time, it will become a full-time home in retirement.
The clients, based in Boulder, came to F9 Productions with a simple goal. Build something modest, efficient, and durable. A cabin that could handle the realities of mountain living without unnecessary cost or complexity. What followed is a home that proves you do not need excess to create something exceptional.
The Idea
The design starts with restraint. A clean rectangular footprint keeps construction straightforward and cost-effective. Every decision builds from that foundation.
The home is organized into three clear zones. A central living space sits between two private bedroom wings, creating a natural balance between gathering and retreat. The layout feels intuitive the moment you walk in. It draws people toward the center while still giving everyone their own space.
Design and Function
This is a small house that lives larger than it looks.
The main living area acts as the heart of the home. It connects directly to the kitchen, where a single island replaces the need for a formal dining room. It is where meals happen, conversations start, and space is used efficiently without feeling tight.
On one side, the west wing includes the entry and mudroom along with a guest bedroom and bathroom. On the other, the east wing is dedicated to the primary suite. Both bedrooms face south, opening to a full-length deck through large sliding glass doors. The connection to the outdoors is constant, whether you are waking up or winding down.
Built for the Environment
Living in Allenspark comes with real constraints. Wildfire risk, temperature swings, and limited infrastructure all shape how a home needs to perform.
The cabin responds with practical, thoughtful solutions. Non-combustible materials help protect against wildfire. A dedicated sprinkler system and on-site cistern add another layer of security. Fresh water is supplied by a well on the property, allowing the home to operate independently.
Nothing here is overdesigned. Everything has a purpose.
Energy and Performance
The home is quiet in its efficiency, but highly intentional.
Large south-facing windows bring in winter sun, warming the concrete slab below. That slab acts as thermal mass, holding heat during the day and releasing it slowly as temperatures drop at night. Deep overhangs limit heat gain during the summer, keeping the interior comfortable without relying heavily on mechanical systems.
Windows on the other sides of the home are kept to a minimum to reduce heat loss. Radiant heat runs through the slab, creating an even and comfortable temperature throughout the space.
The Result
The Ski Road Cabin is not about making a statement. It is about getting things right.
It is a home that respects its setting, responds to its climate, and uses every square foot with intention. A place designed for real life in the mountains, both now and years into the future.
It shows that when you focus on what matters, simplicity becomes a kind of luxury.
