In 2013, Denver Architects, F9 Productions were commissioned by a growing family to transform their existing structure into a mid-century modern styled home on a cherished lot they did not want to leave. The architectural solution involved creating a two-story house with a new basement, optimizing the lot’s space while preserving a backyard for the family to enjoy.

Client Drivers & Unique Features:

  • Love for Location: The clients loved their location in Denver but needed more space than their existing 850 SF one-story home could provide.

  • Maintaining Backyard Space: On a typical 50’ wide by 125’ long lot, the challenge was to fit the addition while keeping a backyard for play.

  • Orientation for Light and Space: The home was oriented along the southern axis to keep the backyard shaded, using large glass doors to seamlessly connect the living room and kitchen to the outdoor space.

Architectural Features:

  • Mid-Century Modern Style: The design reflects mid-century modern aesthetics, providing a stylish and contemporary look.

  • Two-Story Addition with Basement: The addition of a second story and a new basement maximizes the living space on the lot.
